How to get your Texas driver license

Adults 18–24 must complete a 6-hour adult driver education course before getting the learner license.

    Complete the 6-hour adult driver education course

    Mandatory

    A state-approved 6-hour adult driver education course is required for ages 18–24 before the written exam.

    Gather the required documents

    Social Security card, birth certificate, and passport or other DPS-accepted ID — plus 2 utility bills (they don't have to be in your name).

    Visit DPS & get your learner permit

What to bring

Documents for your learner permit

Bring these to your DPS appointment to get your Texas learner license.

Everyone brings

  • Proof of identity — U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, or permanent resident card
  • Social Security card
  • 2 utility bills (they don't have to be in your name)

Teens (15–17) also bring

  • Verification of Enrollment (VOE) from the teen's school
  • DE-964 certificate (after completing 6 hours of the course)

What you'll need for the road test

We provide a properly equipped, insured vehicle — but here's exactly what's required.

  • Valid registration & current registration sticker
  • Current insurance (proof of insurance)
  • Working brake lights & turn signals
  • Valid inspection (if required)
  • Front & rear license plates

What to bring

  • Valid learner's permit
  • Driver Education certificate (DE-964)
  • Impact Texas Driver certificate (signed)
  • DL-14A application (optional — for citizens requesting processing)
